Historic Houses

This is a list of some of the places we have visited which are part of “Historic Houses”. We are also members of The National Trust and I may add a separate list for that. We joined on our trip to Northumberland because we realised that three of the places we wanted to visit were part of Historic Houses and that if we added a fourth we would recoup the price of membership.

Some of the properties do not allow photographs to be taken inside, for insurarance reasons.

Bramhall Hall, Stokport

We visited Bramhall Hall in Bramhall Park, Stockport and in Historic Houses.

The whole exterior was not its best as the roof was being repaired.

And the reign of Elizabeth the first and through to the English Civil War, the family found themselves mixing their support.

Cholmondeley Soldiers (at Houghton Hall)

Houghton Hall contains one of the largest collections of model soldiers in the world. They were assembled and mounted starting in 1928 by the sixth Marquess of Cholmodeley. I am hoping that the descriptinos below are correct.

Houghton Hall Norfolk

When we visited Houghton Hall in Norfolk. It was a warm day and the herd of white fallow deer were resting in the shade.

There formal gardens are large and award winning but we liked the foundtain (opens in a new window) “Waterflame - Jeppe Hein - 2008”.

Hoghton Tower

See the entry in the Dolls House’s I have visited pages.  As explained we visited the Tower, having failed to do so in the 11 years we lived in Chorley. In the process of booking I discovered they did touts of their Doll’s Houses and so we went again for such a tour.

Gainsborough’s House

Gainsborough’s House in Subbury consists of the original house in which the artist lived, as well as a fine, smallish, garden. But combined with this are several galleries containing pictures by Gainsborough and by others, many on loan from other collections.
