Barrowford and John Wesley

I visited Barrowford with my son Alex and his three children principally to go to The Model Train Centre one of the few real life railway shops nearby. It is about 40 miles away. We spent most of our time in the local park at the two playgrounds which entertained the children and started the expedition at The Park View Cafe across the river, which is very small and was pretty full when we got there. …

Sir Isaac Newton’s Birthplace

WoolsthorpManor

Some years ago we visited Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire, the birth place of Isaac Newton and now looked after by the National Trust. As I recall the house and contents were very interesting.

However, Sir Isaac Newton wrote more books about theology and alchemy than he did about science, but there was nothing I recall seeing or hearing about that. …

Bunhill Fields

This visit was made in 2006. Our main speaker for the Church Society conference that year was Guy Prentiss Waters on the theme of Justification. Guy travelled over from America and I said we would have a day out in London, so I asked him where he would like to go. …

Titus Salt and Saltaire

We recently visited Salt’s Mill at Saltaire, mainly for lunch with friends but partly to include it in in the Journeying with Faith section of this website.

A model of mill within the large floors open to visitors today.

Memorials to William Cowper - Dereham

Whist on our trip to East Anglia we visited Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury where there is a painting by the artist with a plaque saying it is William Cowper. However, it doesn’t look right. See that page for more information.

Moreton Peto - Norwich Station

As can be seen from the plaque under the bust Sir Samuel Moreton Peto was a Contractor, Politician and Philanthropist. Though this rang a bell I didn’t know why so I looked him up.

He started as an apprentice bricklayer and worked up to become one of the founder members of the

Norwich Cathedral & Maurice Wood

The second of the 100 Best Stations on our East Anglia trip was Norwich Station. We had visited Norwich Cathedral some years ago but I regretted not having taken a particular picture and so we made a return visit.

New Lanark Mills & David Dale

These pages began as a result of a visit to New Lanark Mills, a world heritage site, on the banks of the River Clyde. Reading about the site beforehand I was curious about the ‘philanthropist’ who had established the mills and his motives. …

Cowper and Newton Museum, Olney

We passed through Olney in Buckinghamshire on a journey down to Essex to call in at the Cowper and Newton Museum. I knew a good amount about John Newton but not much about William Cowper (pronounced Cooper). They are perhaps most famous for their Hymns.
