New Lanark Mills & David Dale

These pages began as a result of a visit to New Lanark Mills, a world heritage site, on the banks of the River Clyde. Reading about the site beforehand I was curious about the ‘philanthropist’ who had established the mills and his motives. I don’t know if the website has expanded since then but when I looked I couldn’t find much about him.

The visitor center also mentioned Dale, briefly, but again gave no information. Instead there is a lot at the site about Robert Owen. For example it appeared that we woudl be able to visit David Dale’s house and Robert Owen’s house. In the event Dale’s house was closed, and seemingly fairly permanently. In Owen’s house I found a folder about David Dale and it became apparent that Dale was a committed Christian. His famour son-in-law, Robert Owen, was full of himself it seems, but did not think much of the achievements of his father-in-law, David Dale.

I was threfore prompted to find a second hand copy online of the only true biography of Dale and will be givingt a talk about him, God willing, later this year.

This page may therefore be supplemented later.

Although I took some photos of the site I seem to have deleted them. Those above come from the internet.
