These Journeying in Faith pages began as a result of a visit to New Lanark Mills, a world heritage site, on the banks of the River Clyde. Reading about the site beforehand I was curious about the ‘philanthropist’ who had established the mills and his motives. I don’t know if the Mills’ website has expanded since then but when I looked it didn’t seem to say much about Dale.
The visitor centre mentioned Dale, briefly, but again gave no information. Instead there is a lot at the Mills about Robert Owen. For example it appeared that we would be able to visit David Dale’s house and Robert Owen’s house. In the event Dale’s house was closed, and seemingly fairly permanently. In Owen’s house I found a folder about David Dale and it became apparent that Dale was a committed Christian. His famous son-in-law, Robert Owen, seems to have been full of himself, did not think much of the achievements of his father-in-law, David Dale.
I was therefore prompted to find a second-hand copy online of the only true biography of Dale and will be giving a talk about him, God willing, in early 2026.
A talk about David Dale has been added to the website as an article.
Although I took some photos of the site they aren’t particularly good and when I first looked couldn’t find them. The images above both come from the internet.
